We always like to come up with something fun to make for Christmas Breakfast and these Grinch Waffles are the perfect thing! With the red heart waffle and the green whipped cream, these waffles represent the Grinch perfectly.
I love to use my Holstein Heart Waffle Maker for these, but you could make them into pancakes if you don’t have a heart waffle maker. Just pour the batter onto the skillet in the shape of a heart and you’re all set.
My favorite Christmas movie is The Grinch. The Jim Carrey version. He is one of my favorite actors and people of all time. He is very inspirational. So we watch this movie every Christmas Eve as a family.
The best part of the movie is when the Grinch’s Heart starts growing. His overacting comes into play perfectly here. He is so funny! But it’s so heartwarming to see his heart grow. I think it really helps the kids understand what is going on. He is feeling the love of Christmas. The true spirit of Christmas. Love opens the doors to everything, and the Grinch learned this on Christmas Day when the people of Whoville woke up to no presents but were still happy and content with just being together.
I had to honor my favorite movie with a cute breakfast yesterday. So we made these cute heart waffles. And, homemade whipped cream is a must!
Let’s get started making these adorable Grinch Waffles! This is a basic waffle recipe from Alton Brown, you can use whatever recipe you like though, even a mix will do. I’m all about easy on Christmas morning! Just make sure you add red food coloring to the mix!
Grinch Waffles
For the Waffles:
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 3 eggs
- 2 ounces butter, melted
- 16 oz. buttermilk at room temperature
- 5-10 drops red food coloring
- Green sugar sprinkles (optional)
- Cooking spray for the waffle iron
For the Whipped Cream:
- 2 cups cold heavy whipped cream
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla (if desired)
- 5-8 drops green food coloring
Preheat the Holstein Waffle Maker according to manufacturer’s directions.
In a medium bowl whisk together the flours, soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In another bowl beat together eggs and melted butter, and then add the buttermilk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until combined. Add the red food coloring until it reaches the desired color. Allow to rest for 5 minutes.
Spray the waffle maker with the cooking spray. Ladle the recommended amount of waffle batter onto the iron according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Close iron top and cook until the waffle is golden on both sides and is easily removed from iron. Serve immediately or keep warm in a 200 degree F oven until ready to serve.
To make the whipped cream, pour heavy whipping cream, sugar and vanilla into the cold bowl and whisk on high speed until medium to stiff peaks form, about 1 minute. When the cream starts to stiffen, add the food coloring until you reach the desired color. Mixing in between adding a few drops at a time. Do not over beat or it will turn to sweet butter!
Serve the waffles warm with a dollop of whipped cream on top and a light sprinkling of green sugar. Enjoy!
