A Fun, Mess-Free, Kid-Approved Activity for Bored Afternoons
You know those days when the kids are stir-crazy, the house looks like a tornado rolled through, and you just need an activity that’s both entertaining and easy to clean up? Yep, we’ve all been there.
Well, when we moved into a new house, my kids were DONE with the chaos. After one too many boxes and a surprise flood from a moody sump pump (fun times), my boys were desperate for something fun. That’s when my 10-year-old reminded me—again—that he wanted to make Silly Putty. And this time, I finally said YES.
Let me tell you, this little science-meets-slime project saved the day. We made it with just two ingredients, and the giggles and gooey fun were so worth it.
Why You’ll Love This Silly Putty Recipe
Only 2 ingredients (plus food coloring if you want it colorful!)
Super easy for kids to help with
Great for sensory play
Budget-friendly and quick
A total boredom buster!
This recipe is slightly messy at first, so make sure you have paper towels under the kids as they work. You can even put gloves on them if they are sensitive to gooey, slimy stuff!
I found this recipe at PBS.org and followed her directions. And it just so happen’s that when I sent my hubby to the store to get these supplies, he picked the right brand and version just by chance! Yay!
What You’ll Need
Elmer’s Multi-Purpose Glue (NOT school glue—this is important!)
Optional: Food coloring (for extra fun)
How to Make It
Cover your table! This gets messy if they get crazy while stirring. I like to lay down parchment paper or paper towels. Gloves are optional but helpful for goo-sensitive kiddos.
Mix equal parts glue and starch in a small bowl. We used 3 tablespoons of each for two kids.
Add 5–7 drops of food coloring and stir.
When it starts to clump, pick it up and knead it like dough until it turns into stretchy, bouncy putty!
Store in a zip-top bag when you’re done.
Mom Tip:
Don’t let Silly Putty anywhere near your carpet, couch, or clothing unless you’re ready for a clean-up mission. 6

My two youngest, Sinjin and Kade (AKA my silly putty pros), had a blast filming their step-by-step tutorial. Check out the video below for laughs, tips, and lots of fun. Spoiler alert: they’re adorable.

Thank you so much…..I have made a Goop/ Gack with similar ingredients. Is Multi purpose glue different than the regular elmers glue?
Yes, it is different. It works better because it’s stronger.
