I think whomever came up with the idea to serve soup or stew in a bowl made of bread is a genius! Talk about a dinner for Autumn. Stew served in bread is a comfort food for sure. I’ve always wanted to make them, but never have until now. So today I’m going to show you how to make bread bowls from scratch at home. Yay!

It’s actually much more simple than making dinner rolls in my opinion. They are basically just very large dinner rolls!
Here are the tools I used to make this recipe:
Measuring Spoons I love these ones because they are skinny and fit inside those small spice bottles.
Silicone Mat this mat saves my life because I hardly ever need to use flour to keep dough from sticking. I hate throwing flour all over the place when working with dough.
Now, let’s get down to business.
Bread Bowl’s Recipe
- 7 cups all purpose flour
- one egg
- 1 tablespoon water
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until bubbly, about 10 minutes. Pour the yeast mixture into your stand mixer or a large mixing bowl.
Add salt, oil and 4 cups flour to the yeast mixture; beat well. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well with an electric mixer or stand mixer at medium speed after each addition.
When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 minutes. Or you can knead it with a dough hook in your stand mixer. Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap sprayed with non stick spray and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes.
Oops! Ha Ha! I left it a little too long to rise!
Punch dough down, and divide into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a 4 inch round loaf. This is when the kids really like to pitch in.
Oooo! I just want to pinch his cheeks! Love him so much!
He is very good and patting the rolls into a perfect circle!
Place loaves on lightly greased baking sheets.
Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, until doubled in bulk, about 35 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a small bowl, beat together egg and 1 tablespoon water; lightly brush the loaves with the egg wash.
Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden.
Cool on wire racks.
To make bowls: Cut a 1/2 inch thick slice from top of each loaf; scoop out center of the bowl.
Fill bread bowls with hot soup or stew and serve immediately.
