I am a youth leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and we have a fun tradition of spotlighting a girl every week in our Sunday class. We wanted the girls to get to know each other by spotlighting each other, instead of a leader doing it each week. So we came up with the Spotlight Bucket idea.
Each girl filled out a questionnaire and we put each paper in an envelope with $5. So the girl who was spotlighted that week draws an envelope for another girl, takes the money and buys the next girl some fun gifts for the spotlight bucket.
We used an Elmer’s Paint Pen to write “Spotlight Bucket” on the bucket itself so it doesn’t get confused with other buckets at the girls homes. That way we make sure it makes it back to church every Sunday 🙂
This has been so much fun for the girls to go shopping for each other. We took the money out of our budget and thought it was a good way to spend it because we are all getting to know each other better this way.
I think this would be fun for any Youth Group, not just an LDS group. What do you think? Do you spotlight the Young Women in your wards?

Cute idea! We’re actually having a hard time cutting down our opening exercises time so there’s actually time for a lesson. How long do you spend on this during YW? And what questions do you have on your questionnaire?

Melanie, it takes about 3 minutes. The girls just read off of the paper they were given and the spotlighted girl wears an embarrassing crown during the spotlight. It really doesn’t take up too much time and the girls love it! The questions were things like: whats your favorite band/song . . . what’s your favorite treat? . . . what’s a story your family always tells about you? . . . What’s your favorite temple? . . . what’s your favorite form of exercise? . . . what chore do you hate doing? . . . etc.
