Greek food is so flavorful and so healthy. I love it when I find a good Greek Restaurant. They are HARD to come by. My favorite one is a 4 hour drive away, in our old home town. They make an amazing spicy chicken gyro that I love. I haven’t been able to get that recipe just right yet, but I do have this yummy alternative that is SO GOOD! This Greek Lemon Chicken Gyro is to die for and with the freshly made Tzatziki sauce it tastes better than the restaurant, because you made it at home.
This recipe makes about 10-12 Gyros. I used the leftovers to make delicious salads for lunch for a few days afterward. The chicken is marinated in a lemon yogurt sauce then barbecued. The Tzatziki Sauce is so easy to make and so flavorful with dill weed and cucumber. These are both so easy to make and your family will love them.
Greek Lemon Chicken Gyros with Fresh Tzatziki Sauce
- 4-5 skinless boneless chicken breasts
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing
- 1/2 cup lemon juice
- 4 Tbsp plain Greek yogurt
- 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 tsp onion salt
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/4 tsp pepper
10-12 Greek Pita Flatbread, homemade or store-bought. I buy mine at Costco or Wal-Mart up by the meat counter. Tzatziki sauce (recipe follows). Cherry tomatoes cut in half, chopped Romaine lettuce, diced red onions, feta cheese, parsley.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, Greek yogurt, red wine vinegar, onion salt, garlic, oregano, thyme and season with freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Place chicken in a gallon ziploc bag, pour marinade over chicken and seal bag. Press out excess air and put in refrigerator to marinate 2 – 4 hours.Â
Brush grill with olive oil and preheat over medium high heat. Once the grill is hot, cook the chicken for about 7 minutes on each side or until an internal thermometer reads 165 degrees. Remove from the grill. Allow to rest 10 minutes and slice into strips.
