Making New Years Resolutions and Keeping New Years Resolutions are two completely different things. The past few years I have been successful because I set realistic goals. I’ve learned that if I choose ONE WORD for the year, it helps me focus on what I want. This year my resolution word is “Act”. Why did I choose this word?
Because I wait. I wait and wait and wait. I wait for other people to do what needs to be done. I wait for the right time to go to the gym. I wait for the last minute to get my work done. I wait to prepare lessons. I wait to get things done around the house. I wait until tomorrow to eat right. And I’m tired of WAITING! So now I’m ACTING.
One of the best tips I’ve learned for keeping goals is to tell your family and friends your goals and asking for support. If everyone is not aware of your goals, they can not help you achieve them. For example: Last year I told my husband that I wanted to stop drinking soda, so he supports me and doesn’t buy soda anymore. I know that if it’s in the house, I’ll drink it. This year I’m focusing on fitness. Not because I want to be skinny (because I know skinny is stupid) but because I want to be in shape and have a healthy heart. I want to be a “Full Out” mom. If you have every taken a dance class before, you know what “Full Out” means. It means you aren’t “marking” the dance, you are DOING the dance the best you can. That’s my goal.
Now, I’m not completely out of shape. I can stay on the elliptical for 45 minutes and do my weight lifting every day, but I have blubber. Blubber that makes me mad. Blubber that motivates me to TONE and TIGHTEN. So this year I’m ACTING and getting in shape. I’ve told my family and they support me 100%.
I have a 4 year old at home and he doesn’t like going to the daycare at the gym, so I workout when the kids get home from school so they can watch him. My kids support my goals by taking care of him while I workout. If you don’t have older kids to help babysit, consider trading babysitting with another mom. Take turns working out. Or set a time you both can go out for a walk with the kids when the weather is nice. Wake up early and exercise when your husband is still at home. Or, turn on a show for the kids to watch while you workout in the living room, or walk up and down the stairs. Just get up and do something active.
I hired a personal trainer to kick my butt in gear. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be doing weight training. I’ve learned from him that weight training is the best for my body and will help me achieve my goals. If I didn’t have a personal trainer, I’d be going about it all wrong. I also keep track of my progress with worksheets that he gives me. It’s been eye opening to see how quickly I am becoming strong.
Another thing I like to do is reward myself for working out. My personal trainer said I could have one “cheat day” a week. He said it was required to stay sane 😉 I’ve also made a deal with myself that I could buy a new wardrobe once I reached my fitness goals.
A really fun way to reward myself is using the FitStudio by Sears program. FitStudio.com is a free, one-stop fitness destination and rewards platform. 15 Ways to Achieve 15
Try their 15 fitness tips to achieve 15 miles or burn 1,500 calories, and earn $5 in Shop Your Way(r) points (5,000 points). Cha-ching!
1. Track your activity
Numbers don’t lie: Use a fitness tracker, like FitBit, to monitor your distance and active calories honestly.
2. Walk on air
If you could walk on air, it’d probably feel something like riding on an elliptical machine. The angels told us so.
3. Interval-train
Break out of the steady-state rut, and change your running pace to boost your metabolism. And leave calories in the dust.
4. Go plyo
A jump rope isn’t a toy. It’s a plyometric training weapon that blast calories fast. Use it liberally.
5. Make pressure-free promises
The trick is to commit to an exercise that’s still doable when life doesn’t go perfectly, which happens daily.
6. Follow Fartlek
A Swedish word meaning speed play, Fartlek training lets you randomly add sprints to your workout when you’re ready.
7. Rock a vest
You gain some, you lose some. Wear a weighted vest to boost your calorie burn.
8. Change your scenery
Do a running tour through a swanky neighborhood, or virtually hike through Hawaii with Google Maps on iFit.
9. Escape your cubicle
Swap your sugar break for fresh air. Breeze past the vending machine at work, and head straight outdoors.
10. Watch your heart rate
Heart rate measures intensity. Know where you stand and make adjustments to train smarter.
11. Strength-train
Back away from the cardio briefly, and build some lean muscle, why don’t you? It’ll help you burn more calories.
12. Get competitive
Share workout stats with everyone you know and love. A little trash talk won’t hurt—everyone wins!
13. Add incline
Sky’s the limit of your calorie burning. Up the ante of your walk or run. We’ll reward you at the top.
14. Walk on water
Unless you can solicit divine intervention, we suggest you take an active seat on a rowing machine.
15. Reward yourself
We shouldn’t be the only one rewarding you for staying fit. You should also treat yourself, and don’t hold back.
So now you can get out and get moving! Connect your favorite fitness apps to FitStudio.com and start earning rewards. Keep on track by asking those around you to support your goals and don’t give up! Start fresh the next day if you’ve had a bad day and don’t ever get down on yourself! Just ACT!
