I love Mod Podge! I use it all the time and with almost every craft I make. Since Halloween is coming up soon, I thought it would be fun to make a glow in the dark craft for my walls. And guess what? Mod Podge has a glow in the dark version! So cool!
What you’ll need for this project:
- 8×8 canvas
- Yellow acrylic paint
- Purple acrylic glitter paint
- Black acrylic paint
- Glow in the dark Mod Podge
- Mod Podge Vanilla White Collage Clay
- Paint brushes
- Green Mod Melts
- Alphabet Mod Molds
There are a few craft products that I used for this craft that I haven’t used before. The Mod Podge ® Collage Clay is a lightweight whipped clay and is perfect for creating Decoden projects. You can use it to embed decorated Mod Mold embellishments to create fresh and fun projects. The white clay can be tinted with FolkArt Multi-Surface Paint to create custom colors. I used the clay to create the 3D effect of the spider and it’s web on my canvas.
In order to make the web and spider, I laid down wax paper and used the thin tip on the Collage Clay to “draw” the web and spider onto the wax paper. I let it sit over night to dry then I was done! So easy! After it was done drying, I painted the spider black. (Keep reading to learn how I made his eyes).
To create the BEWARE letters, I first tried making them with the Collage Clay, but I liked it better with the glitter green Mod Melts. These are so fun! You just pop them in your glue gun, squeeze them into the Mod Molds, let cool and pop them right out! As you can see below, the Mod Molds come in a variety of shapes. My kids had so much fun (supervised by me of course) making all sorts of little embellishments with these.
See how easily they pop right out of the molds?
Here is the variety of cute things my kids made with just one mold.
Now it was time to start painting my canvas. I started out my painting a circle for the moon, going off the corner of the canvas. Then I painted black on the rest of the canvas. Don’t forget to paint all the way around the canvas so when you hang it on your wall you see the color continuing. After those dried, I added the purple glitter paint over just the top of the black paint to make it sparkle.
On the bottom image above, I had “painted” the Mod Podge Glow in the Dark paste over JUST the moon. This way the moon will glow, and not the whole canvas.
I used two drops of the glow in the dark Mod Podge for the spiders eyes too. Just use the stick end of your paint brush and dip it in the Mod Podge. Then drop it where you want the eyes on your spider.
Then use the same technique to add a pupil to the center of the Mod Podge using black paint this time.
Next I used the glow in the dark Mod Podge to cover the web with a few layers of glue so it would glow. Then I added some to the back of the web and used that to stick it to the top right hand corner of the canvas. I used the Mod Podge to glue the spider to the center of the moon also.
Next I used the Mod Podge Collage Clay to add the web the spider was hanging from to the canvas.
When it was dry, I added a coat or two of the glow in the dark Mod Podge.
Next I added the BEWARE letters by dipping them in the Mod Podge, and sticking them to the bottom left hand corner of the canvas. Then I painted more glow in the dark Mod Podge over the top of the letters so they would glow too.
After everything was set and dry, I wanted to add a little messy border to the moon, so I used the bottom of my paint brush again and “drew” black paint lines around the moon.
Then I was done! I think it turned out cute, don’t you? Now let’s see what it looks like when it’s glowing:
Pretty cool huh? I like it!
