The mornings are crisp and the evenings are getting cooler. Fall is on it’s way and we are celebrating by trying out some new grilled cheese sandwiches. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are a comfort food for me. We like adding a twist on the basic sandwich. This time was a great success! We used Manchego Cheese, Smoked Ham and Pear Slices for this amazing Grilled Cheese Sandwich.
Before making a grilled cheese sandwich, you need to decide what kind of bread to use. I like using 100% whole wheat because I know it’s healthier for my family. Some people think it’s too dry, but this recipe makes the bread nice and moist.
My favorite bread makers are Roman Meal. I love them because their bread is always baked fresh, locally in regional bakeries across the United States to deliver freshly baked bread to my local grocery store. Roman Meal’s Whole Grains are a good source for vitamin D, calcium, and fiber! We like to eat whole grains because they help with digestion and weight management. Studies have also shown whole grain intake may reduce the risk of heart disease. We want to be around for a long time for our families so we need to make sure we are eating healthy.
Now I know you’re like “What is Manchego Cheese?” Well let me tell you a little about it. It’s a sheep’s milk cheese. It’s white and has tiny little holes in it, kind of like Swiss cheese. It has a really mild flavor and my kids love eating it plain. We buy it at Costco down the cheese isle. For the mustard, we use the Sandwich Pal Sweet and Spicy Mustard.
Manchego, Smoked Ham and Pear Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
- Manchego Cheese, sliced
- Sliced Smoked Deli Ham
- Sweet and Spicy Mustard (Brown Mustard) or Dijonaise
- Green Pears sliced very thin
Lay out the amount of bread you need for the sandwiches.
Start by spreading the mustard on one side of the bread.
Then add the ham.
The pear slices come next.
Then the cheese is last.
Put the other slice of bread on top and spread butter on the outside of that bread.
Preheat a griddle to 350 degrees. Add the sandwiches, butter side down, to the griddle.
While they are cooking, spread butter on the other side.
Flip when golden brown. Cook the other side until golden brown and cheese is soft.
Slice in half and serve warm. Mmmmmm!
My husband likes his open faced with no butter on the bread. He just makes the sandwich without a top then heats it under the broiler in the oven.
