I just love how simple and cute these little Turkey Cookies are! You’re kids are going to love to make these with you and the best part, you’ll get the kids thinking about who they are thankful for!
You can read her original post about these HERE.
I love helping my children understand gratitude and being thankful. It is certainly a challenge with the little ones (3 years and 1 year) but my daughter Madeline, at the age of 11 is so grateful for all of the blessings in her life.
This year for Thanksgiving Madeline wanted to give the loved ones she is so grateful for something special she made. So we made these “Thankful Turkey Cookies”. They were so simple to make, even the little ones helped!
This is what you need:
- 1 Package Refrigerated Cookie Dough
- 1 container icing
- food coloring
- little decorations for eyes and beaks – we used cut up gummy worms which worked awesome!
We cooked two pans of cookies – one a bit smaller than the other. The bigger cookies were the bodies, and the little cookies were the heads. In the bigger cookies we cut slits to look like feathers like this:
Once they were cooled we stuck them together with icing and decorated. This activity, for me, was about what we did while decorating the cookies.
While we were decorating the cookies we dedicated each turkey cookie to a person we were grateful for. We talked about that person, about why we were so grateful for them and ways we could let that person know our gratitude and thankfulness every day.
The things the kids came up with were very simple … and perfect. Smiling, telling them we love them, spending time with them, and doing specific activities they like with them were popular ones.
This activity was great for everyone in my family – from the littlest to the biggest. My 3 year old really began to understand what being thankful meant and started to understand how truly blessed he is – and we all are. Even my youngest at just 1 year participated — albeit he was eating a Thankful Turkey Cookie — but trust me, he was very thankful of that!
Madeline made a cute note card to accompany each cookie, and my Turkeys flew their Turkey Cookies around town. My wee ones were so proud to give their cookies away! And of course, very thankful to eat them too.
