How to Dip Dye Your Hair with Kool-Aid

07/13/13 | How To, Kids Crafts and Coloring

My daughter has a very unique style. She really loves to be different. She loves to be a trend setter. She should really be a stylist or a clothing designer when she grows up! Anyway, she asked me if she could dye the tips of her hair red. I didn’t want something permanent, so we decided to use kool-aid.

How to Dip Dye Your Hair with Kool-Aid:

  • One package Kool-Aid the color you want to dye your hair
  • Water

1. Add about an inch of water to a small pan and heat until boiling.  Mix the Kool-Aid with the boiling water into a cereal size bowl.

2. Put your hair in a low pony tail and dip your hair in the mixture as high as you want the dye to go.

3. Leave in the dye for about 7 minutes.

4. Using an old rag or a few paper towels, towel dry the hair

5. Blow dry the hair.  Don’t wash for about 2 days.

This dye has lasted a few weeks already even with washing.  It really does last along time.  I’ve been told about 1-3 months.

Devin, If your hair is getting sticky then you did it wrong. You are not supposed to add sugar to the mix. Only water and the Kool-aid mix from the small packets. Not the pre-made drink mix that comes in the container. Follow the directions exactly and it works.

I’m a Mormon and REALLY REALLY want to dye the ends of my dark blonde hair a fuschia color. Do you think this is too extreme for the standards of my religion?

I’m not sure how dark hair will work with that. Test a spot and see what it looks like. It might just show up when the light hits it right.

I have dirty blond hair and my favorite color is blue. Do you think light blue will look good on my hair? I’ve asked my friends and they just won’t answer so what do you think?

I’ve done this before, and it washed out in a few days. I’m pretty sure I did it wrong, because one of my best friends did her hair like this a little before I did, and her color is still there. But it does wash out and fade over time. 🙂

You could tell her that it’s not permanent and it doesn’t damage your hair. I think red is the most vibrant color. It might show up with dark hair.

Will this bleed on anything? Like when she sweats? Or if she’s sitting on my brand new furniture?

No it will not bleed. It dyes the hair then you can wash it.

My hair is medium brown and when we tried it the first time, it didn’t show up but showed up fine in my sister’s blonde hair. Then I did it again and we doubled the amount needed and it was still pretty light. So if you have dark hair I would try doing more kool-aid and maybe even leaving your hair in the dye longer.
