I have to admit, my children’s closets need some help! It also doesn’t help that they have to share rooms! We have a girls room with 2 girls in it and a boy’s room with 2 boys in it. Their rooms are very small, and we can only fit one dresser in there with their bunk beds. The closets need to be organized, or I just can’t fit it all in!! Also, toys, books, shoes, and off season clothes have to fit in there somewhere…
So before school starts and when the seasons change, we try to go through out clothing, toys and shoes. I think having an organized closet helps the kids feel less rushed in the morning if they can find that favorite outfit easier, and I will be a happy, calm mom! Here are some things we have done to keep our closets organized.
This is what you do: ( your child helps you with every step! DO NOT do it all yourself, or your child will not have respect for their things. They WILL NOT put their things back in their place if they did not help you)
Have your child bring out their drawers into the living room and all clothes from the closet that have been hanging along with all empty hangers. (This way, you can watch Oprah, or Cartoons and it won’t be so boring!) Then organize as follows:
1. Sort and discard! Go through your child’s clothes and decide which clothes they will wear, and give the rest to charity. Also make a garbage pile. There are some clothing items the charity won’t take, if it is stained or has holes in it. Be selective! If they have a few shirts that look similar, only keep one. Once you are done sorting it’s time to get everything back in its new home.
2. Hang all shirts! This makes laundry easier and cuts way back on drawer clutter. Also, shirts tend to get lost in the bottom of drawers because most children have more shirts than anything else. I have noticed that my children tend to wear the same 5 shirts over and over again, but if they are hung up, they rotate! We love the flexible velvet hangers on Amazon. The kids don’t break them and their clothing doesn’t slip off.
3. Lay underwear flat. It takes up less space! Or you can buy hanging organizers that you can put them in. We use these a lot because we don’t have a lot of drawer space.
4. Don’t roll socks, try to fold them flat also. But if you really like to roll your socks and underwear, they make some amazing organizational dividers for that.
5. Now go through their books and send a bunch to charity. If your child hasn’t read it in a while, get rid of it!
6. Toys, Toys, Toys! This is were garbage bags come in handy. GIVE TO CHARITY WHAT THEY DON’T PLAY WITH! I know that is a hard thing, because some are just so cute! If you must, give your child ten cents for each toy that is thrown out, they will be gung ho after hearing that. You will feel so good after getting rid of all that junk!
7. Make sure everything has a place. If it doesn’t have a specific home, it will never be put away. So make sure your children find a HOME for everything. If they can’t find it a home, it needs to go to charity.
8. Reinforce organization! Every time your child is putting their laundry away (I hope you make them do that themselves!) or cleaning their room, say “Make sure everything goes to its HOME!”
A few more things I absolutely love are purse hangers and these tank top hangers. How smart are these? You can use the purse hanger for your little girls purses and bags. I know they have a ton of them.
What are some of your tips for keeping the kids organized?
