A new mom want’s everything to be perfect before her baby comes.
The house needs to be spotless, everything needs to be organized and she needs her hospital bag to be packed with everything she’ll need for the delivery.
By the way, if you are on the search for a GREAT Pre-Natal Class, you need to check out this online class from my friend, Hilary from Pulling Curls. She is a Labor and Delivery Nurse and she really tells it like it is. You won’t regret it.
Her class includes:
- What to come to the hospital for
- Pain management
- Inductions
- How to know if you’re in labor
- Vaginal deliveries
- Cesaeran deliveries
- Common 3rd trimester testing
- What to expect during your hospital stay
- What to expect when you go home
Today I’m here with some real tips from real moms in a mom group that I belong to. So you know these are things you’ll use and need while in the hospital having your baby.
1. Your own pillow. No one sleeps well in a hospital bed. They are loud and sweaty because they are covered in plastic. So having your own pillow is a must to keep you as comfortable as possible.
2. Comfortable pajamas or sweats. I know, why would you want to change out of that adorable open backed hospital gown!? Ha ha! Trust me, after the first day you’ll want to change into something more comfortable after you shower. Just check with the nurses and ask them if and when you can change out of your gown. It’s usually fine the second day you are there. Make sure that the pajamas you choose will be easy to nurse in, has short sleeves for the IV and is a dress. Pants seem to be a pain with the huge pads you have to wear after giving birth. This nightgown would be perfect.
3. Warm socks. I don’t know what it is about the hospital but for some reason I always had cold feet. Warm fuzzy socks are a must have. I love the socks that have aloe infused in them to make my feet softer too.
4. Your favorite lotion. You will definitely want your lotion with you to moisturize your skin after all that tape from the IV and to keep you comfortable. My favorite lotion that I have been using for years is Curel Fragrance Free Lotion. I only have to apply it once a day and my skin stays soft and moisturized all day long. I have sensitive skin too.
5. Are you planning on nursing? You’ll want to bring Nursing Bras, Nursing pads (although you probably won’t need them because your milk wont let down before you leave the hospital), and Lansinoh Nipple Cream (trust me, apply it after each time you nurse!!).
6. Toiletries. Bring your brush, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair ties, lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, make-up, anything you need to make yourself feel beautiful. You’ll want it all for sure.
7. THE outfit. You know, the special outfit you change your baby into to go home. Some people pick super fancy outfits for this occasion, but I just love a cute and comfortable pajama set for the baby. It’s much easier to put them in their car seat and if their diaper explodes, you won’t care as much. Don’t forget a blanket, binkies and anything else you wanted for the baby.
8. Camera and Phone Charger with a long cord. Of course don’t forget your camera, and while you’re at it why not bring a photographer along to capture everything while you and your husband are busy being in the moment? This is one of those moments when I would use something other than the camera on your phone.
9. Speaker and headphones with your birthing play list (soothing music for the birthing room).
10. Gum. You won’t be able to eat anything for a long time so gum is a nice thing to chew on to keep your mouth from getting dry.
11. Boppy Pillow. If you are planning on nursing or not, the Boppy Pillow is a LIFE SAVER and an ARM SAVER. It holds the baby up in a great position to feed and lets your arms relax.
12. Flip Flops or Slides. The hospital floors are gross. So you want something on your feet while you’re walking around. You can make your own custom slides at islideusa.com too!
13. Snacks. After you have the baby you are really hungry and you will want your own yummy snacks.
14. Car seat. This won’t fit in your bag but you don’t want to forget it.
15. Your favorite books. In early labor and if you have an epidural you’ll want something to read, watch, listen to or play. So download some fun games on your phone too.
So that’s it! That’s all I can think of. Can you think of anything that we missed? Anything that you couldn’t live without? I’ll add it to the list as I get comments.
