Back to school time is creeping closer and closer. I’m sure you’ve seen all the back to school supplies in all the stores already. Back to school time usually makes me anxious, but I’m determined this year to be organized. The most important thing to me during the school year is that my kids are eating right. I know that if my kids are eating right, they will do better in school. My younger kids go to a charter school so I pack them a lunch every day. That means I need to be prepared. I need my freezer, cupboards and fridge to be stocked with healthy meals and snacks the kids can eat.
One problem my kids have, is that they want to eat the whole pantry when they get home from school. They are usually really hungry because they eat lunch relatively early in the day. So to keep them from eating EVERYTHING when they get home, I’ve created an “After School Shelf” in the pantry, fridge and freezer. I head over to Walmart and grab everything I need. And I’ve made a printable checklist for you to print and put on your fridge so you can make sure you are always stocked for the busy school season! You can download your cute FREE printable HERE.
My kids know that they can choose one thing from each shelf when they get home. Then there is not too much overeating going on and they are still hungry for dinner. And I know that they are eating things that are good for them, because I control what goes on those shelves.
Here is what I typically keep stocked on each of those shelves:
Pantry:
- Fruit Cups
- Granola Bars
- Fruit Snacks
- Crackers
Fridge:
- Fresh Fruit and Veggies
- Yogurt
- Pudding Cups
- Hummus Dip
- Lunch Meat
- String Cheese
- Milk
- Juice
Freezer:
- Corn Dogs
- TysonⓇ Any’tizers® Snacks (My kids love the Honey BBQ Wings)
- TysonⓇ Grilled and Ready® Chicken
- On the go yogurts (my kids like to eat them frozen)
I like to make sure that there is plenty of protein in the snacks and lunches that the kids eat so they can stay full, longer. So I make sure I keep a supply of Tyson® Grilled and Ready® chicken in the freezer. You can grab these yummy things in the freezer section at Walmart
The kids like to add it to the Quesadillas they make after school. These yummy quesadillas keep them from feeling hungry until dinner is served.
I always buy uncooked tortillas because they taste so much better. So the teenagers make these when they get home from school.
They warm up the Tyson® Grilled and Ready® chicken in the microwave . . .
Cook one side of the tortilla and flip it over and add cheese to one side . . .
Sprinkle the chicken over the cheese . . .
Sprinkle with taco seasoning . . .
Flip closed and let cook for another few seconds to help the cheese melt. And you’re done!
This is definitely one of their favorite after school snacks!
Delicious!
