These simple and fun groundhog Day Activities, Crafts and Songs are perfect for your preschool class. A shadow is a hard thing to explain to a child so it’s always fun to demonstrate what a shadow does.

Get a flashlight or even better a projector to shine on a preschool wall. Have the children stand in front of the light and watch their shadow copy them. Have them dance around, move forward and back, and try to make silly shapes with their shadow. We just had the children sit on the rug and watch as they waited for their turn.
Then we colored some groundhogs and made this cute pop up craft. Will the groundhog see his shadow? When the kids are done, let them play with the groundhogs shadows with the light.
All you need is brown or green construction paper, small water cups, the groundhog printable (see below), sucker sticks or popsicle sticks, tape and brown crayons.
Cover the cups with green or brown construction paper. Then using a Popsicle stick or sucker stick, tape the colored and cut out groundhog to it. Then poke a hole in the bottom of the cups and stick the sticks through the hole.
My preschoolers enjoyed celebrating groundhog day throughout last week. We enjoyed many activities. The children enjoyed making the groundhog craft. I chose this craft because my students love to paint and color. They also like to make things they can take home to show their families. Many of my children are still coming and telling me stories about their groundhog in the cup and if he does or doesn’t see his shadow each and every day. Thank you for this great idea!
