Owls are all the rage these days.  My daughter LOVES them.  So when we were getting ready to make some new heating pads, she naturally wanted hers to look like an Owl.  I saw this tutorial here, and thought, that is really cute.  So I made a bigger version of these for her.  She gets leg cramps at night, and a little heating pad wouldn’t cut it.

Now on to the tutorial: pin the pattern to your ironed fabric. Cut out the pieces and you should have all these pieces:

Now take the top of the owl only, and sew on the white eyes about where I have them placed here:

Now for the color of the eye:  I like mine at the bottom of the white . . .

Now for the pupil.  Towards the bottom of they eye . . .

Now sew on the beak in the middle of the eyes:

Once you have the eyes and beak finished, then you can start sewing the back onto the bird.  Make sure the wrong sides are together, we are NOT turning this inside out.

Start at the bottom off center and sew all the way around until you are about 2 inches away from where you started.  Reverse each time you start and stop to reinforce the stitches. (You need this hole to fill the bag with rice.)

Using a funnel, fill the bag about 3/4 full of rice.

Very carefully, sew the bag shut.  Try not to spill rice all over your sewing machine And you’re done!!

Heating Instructions: Heat in microwave at full power for one minute, check to see if bag is hot enough, if not nuke another minute or so until the desired hottness (that’s not really a word, but sometimes you just have to make stuff up!)
